CHORUS

A message from Miss Super:

Fifth graders and families: welcome to an action-packed, music-filled year! In the East Penn School District, all Grade 5 students participate in chorus as part of the music curriculum.  Chorus helps students develop their singing and music-reading skills.  It also prepares students for the musical groups they will be able to join in middle school and high school by teaching them how to follow a conductor and work together toward a common musical goal. Students will rehearse musical selections for both a winter and a spring concert.  Students will also have the opportunity to audition for featured singing, speaking, and instrumental parts. Preparation for each concert will begin in students’ weekly music class.  A portion of their 40-minute class will be allocated for rehearsing concert music.  In addition to time in music class, the entire fifth grade will also participate in eight 40-minute chorus rehearsals leading up to each concert.

The concert dates for the year are December 3, 2014 and May 6, 2015 (7:00 pm for both concerts)Make sure to mark these important dates in your calendar now! Please note that it is expected that all students will be present for both concerts unless there is an extreme, unforeseen circumstance. Performances offer students experience that is vital to their musical growth. Our performances will consist of a traditional choral concert in the winter and a musical in the spring. Performing both a concert and a musical will give students opportunities to explore various types of vocal music. In addition, since students will be able to join choir and theatre in middle school, this gives them a chance to experience both of these musical “worlds” before entering that environment next year.

Another date to mark on your calendar is November 24, 2014 – this is the date of the Shoemaker PTO’s Barnes & Noble Night. The chorus and handchimes will be performing at this event. Please note that the event is scheduled from 6:00-8:00 pm. The timing of our performance will be announced shortly. The performance will last approximately 30 minutes.

As autumn progresses, I will have more detailed information about the winter concert and the Barnes & Noble event (attire, arrival times, etc.). In an effort to save paper, all further information will be communicated through my website and the classroom teachers’ websites. Please check my site often for updates and consider signing up for my monthly email newsletter (click on "newsletters" in the top right-hand corner and enter in your info).  11 students will be selected to be part of the club, and those students will rehearse with me each Day 1 from 12:40-1:10 for the remainder of the school year. Students will prepare music to perform at the winter and spring concerts.
